Today is a holy day, the old life has passed, the time of rest in nature approaches. Tonight the living and the dead stand on the same plane of existence. Meditate on what you have achieved and done these past seasons ,remember and respect those that have gone before and sacrifice something in honour of the dead…

It is so isolated that a third of its plant life is found nowhere else on the planet. Notable are the dragon’s blood trees that look like flying saucers perched on trunks. Dorstenia gigas are trees that require no soil and look like elephants’ legs with pink flowers on top. Birds such as the Socotra starling, Socotra sunbird, and Socotra grosbeak are found nowhere else on Earth. Bats are the island’s only native mammal. There are almost no roads on the island, which is also home to a collection of caves and a number of shipwrecks.

In celebration of Earth Day, NASA presents images of Earth captured by cameras aboard the International Space Station. Traveling at an approximate speed of 17,500 miles per hour, the space station orbits Earth every 90 minutes from an altitude of approximately 220 miles, and can be seen from Earth with the naked eye. Its crew experiences 16 sunrises and sunsets each day.
