Be a Predator
If you ever talked to me it’s very likely that I told you about how happy I am with Ipredator, the anonymous VPN (a secure, encrypted, private communication tunnel between two or more devices across the internet) I use to pirate Johan Palm Porn hide my IP from the rest of the world (and the wide web too). The only downside about it is that it costs € 5 per month and is still not open to the public.
Enter BlackVPN: They are free and they are having a beta test too, but it’s open for everyone. Just use the invite code “GetUp” to sign up and you’re ready to go. Setting the whole thing up is dead simple and after 5 minutes you’re set to surf the web without having to fear you get in trouble for downloading torrents or visiting sites like 12chan ;)
I don’t know the guys behind BlackVPN so I can’t tell how reliable the service is but like Pirate Bay’s Ipredator they promise that they don’t store any connection data – so even if any authority will ask them to identify a customer they couldn’t because they don’t have any logs to do so.
The cool thing about BlackVPN is that you can chose between different IP’s. One from the USA, one from the UK and one from the Netherlands (which seems to be Swedish actually). This means you can use services which are available in specific countries only, like BBC’s iPlayer in the UK or Hulu in the US.

Levi says:
Oh thanks Josh! There was no way I was going to pay for Ipredator.

I signed up for this a few days ago, and have been using the NL server for some of my surfing during that time. However, I tried to log into that server today, and it said my login and pass were not recognized on that domain. I tried the USA server and got the same result, so with some trpidation, I tried the UK server, and I was able to log in and use it just fine.
I didn’t go anywhere questionable while using it today, because – pardon my paranoia – I’m leery about using that server especially if it’s the only one I can get on. I don’t care what black VPN says about being anon and not logging your surfing, I think it’s odd that the UK server is the only one I can use, especially since the UK has some of the most intrusive internet policies and laws in the world. They routinely record and log all activity that passes through UK servers no matter where it comes from.
I did send a note to the blackVPN support people about this. I’ll let you all know what I hear back.

[...] Did you check out Skyclad Scribble lately? Because you should if you want to know how to surf the web anonymously for free, if you like Swedish cake or if you wanna see some cute photos from the Stockholm Pride :) [...]
nimatek says:
I just want to point out that the piratebay guys never released the specs for their vpn. Apparently it uses an outdated proprietary protocol (pptp) with insufficient 128 bit encryption that has already been cracked.
Apart from that there are the usual vpn security concerns with regard to who operates the service.
In my opinion it is bad juju and i wouldn’t use it without proper end-to-end encryption like SSL and of course not pay for it.
ardoslover says:
Thanks, Josh. I don’t do Twitter, so I missed that. I still haven’t heard anything back from blackVPN, but I was able to access all three of the VPN servers today.
I will say, though, that nimatek has a very good point about the encryption issue.
Josh says:
Dunno if that’s true Nimi because when I read the same thing it was brought up by a guy who runs a commercial VPN service and is obviously scared about the fact that IPREDator costs only a quarter of what people have to pay for his service. I’ll try to ask Peter Sunde about that ‘tho. He seems to be pretty talkative on Twitter and already replied a few times before when I asked him stuff about IPREDator so there might be a chance to get this info ^^
Jay says:
I tried to sign up this evening in the US and after about 30 minutes of waiting for my form data to send in both IE and Mozilla, I’m giving up for tonight. Hopefully its just a glitch and will be working tomorrow.
nalairian says:
doesn´t work , Tried several times to set up an acount or get a password. nothing goes. when does IPREDator go online for everyone??
scout says:
Unless you use torrents, I’d use TOR for secure web browsing.
Josh says:
TOR is way too slow for me (VPNs are nearly as fast as your normal connection). And besides that you never know who’s sniffing that exit node you’re using :/
Jayden says:
Hmm, a godaddy $4.00 a year domain registered for just one year. My alarm bells are ringing.
You may have a very clean and uncrackable connection out of your country into their servers but it is a given that they can monitor all information while it inside their server.
Usernames, Passwords… your bank account should you forget to disable it before doing your online banking.
Maybe if it wasn’t just a one year go daddy domain, but that leaves a real sour taste on my tongue.
travis says:
i can’t get blackVPN to work. are there any more free VPNs?
Stan says:
Can’t sign up either over a period of 10 days or so.
with SSL connection I think they cannot read your communication as read at wikipedia. bank sites are always protected with ssl.
Jay says:
Just tried again and it worked. I was logged in through ninjacloak at the time, so I’m not sure if my source domain had anything to do with it.
Chris says:
